in it, and you will find rest for your souls...” (Jeremiah 6.16). As pertinent as it was two thousand and five hundred years ago, this verse is even more relevant today. At a time when H.H Aboune Antonios, 3rd patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church has been removed from his seat in violation of Canonical Laws, the verse is a constant reminder to God’s People who want to worship God according to His way. At a time when the devil & his co-workers spread falsehood like a virus, it challenges us to examine the truth from falsehood and rumors from facts.
The conference had three main components - sermons, lectures and seminars; but all were aimed at edifying the church body.
Sermons
Sermons were given by priests and are based on the Biblical theme verse that was selected for this year. Priests preached and reminded congregants to keep God at the center of their lives. They admonished congregants not to depend on leaders of this world and instructed them to lean on God & keep His commandments.
Lectures
The lectures were given by the Church deacons and theologians. The lectures were based on the orthodox teaching and focused on dogmatic theology. The importance of Divine Liturgy that is a mutual prayer, the incarnation and its efficacies, and finally, they delivered a presentation on the topic of “salvation" according to the teachings of the Orthodox Church.
Seminars
The seminars focused on cultural and health issues. There were also presentations on the topic of Church Canon & Church Laws that have been violated by secularists who carry no clerical credentials, but are brazen enough to “lead” the church.
All in all the conference went well and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst was evident. It was really a blessing to see young and adult together worshiping and praising God.
We would like to thank the faithful at the Medhane-Alem Eritrean Orthodox Church of Washington DC for hosting and making the 11th Annual Conference of the Diocese a success. We also would like to thank the priests and the faithful who came from across the US, Canada & Europe to participate at the conference.
Several other people must also be thanked for their labor of love. We want to thank all of the delegates who came to the conference, and allowed the Lord to use them to His glory.
"Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice” (Psalm 105.1-3).
