1 I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication. 2 I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble.3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.
Most Biblical writers referred to the term "spirit" as the inner nature of man. St. Mark describes the human Spirit's propensity for readiness saying, "the spirit is indeed willing but the flesh is weak" (Mark 14:38). Crucifixion was an ancient form of capital punishment. It was degrading, humiliating, and caused agonizing pain. Ultimately the HOLY CROSS symbolized absolute failure and death. Due to its barbaric nature, crucifixion was reserved for the lowliest of criminals: the slaves' death or the murderers' punishment. Today, many still look upon the HOLY CROSS with profound horror as a cruel way to inflict punishment or bring about death. Weariness is like the weather-it affects everyone, and there's no escape from it. It hits us all, at least occasionally, and sometimes it enshrouds us like a wet blanket. It's rarely any fun, but it can have a redemptive value. It doesn't have to be utterly frustrating, for it can be sanctifying.
"The true fast is that in which sins, anger, tongue, and instincts are under control" (St Basil the Great).
