To address the needs of the Eritrean faithful in the European countries, His Grace Bishop Mekarios, Bishop of the
North American Archdiocese and the Eritrean Orthodox Church in diaspora felt the urgency to establish a Diocese. Thus, on December 3, 2011, the first Eritrean Orthodox Diocese in Europe has been established. His Grace also appointed a board of clergy to oversee the work of the churches that is accountable to him.
Also, on December 4, 2011, His Grace Bishop Mekarios ordains four newly priests who will serve the Eritrean Orthodox faithful and communities all over the European nations.
During the Devine Liturgy, His Grace Bishop Mekarios was assisted by Comos Kesete G.Michael from the North American Archdiocese, father Tekle-Mariam of Germany and other fathers. A large congregation attended the ordination and the traditional charges to the newly ordained priest were read. At the end of the Liturgy His Grace Bishop Mekarios gave the newly priest a Holy chalice and other gifts. After the ordination, Comos Kesete read the letter of support from the North American Archdiocese.
Afterwards His Grace Bishop Mekarios held a lengthy discussion with the faithful and answers numerous questions during the session.
Under the European Diocese, there are currently about 11 churches serving thousands of faithful and Eritrean communities all over the European nations. Other communities are in the process of establishing their own churches
